Easy orchids

Lots of orchids grow easily in Sydney, given the right spot. The native orchids are a good starting point.
The big Dendrobium speciosum rock orchid is spectacular, and although ideal in a tree, will grow well on a board in a lightly shaded or East-facing spot.
Little Dendrobium kingianum is sweet and super tough, will grow almost anywhere and even in soil.
Dendrobium nobile grows easily in bark, and the Cooktown orchid, Dendrobium phalaenopsis grows and flowers with protection from winter cold.
Cymbidiums grow easily and flower reliably when given plenty of sunlight.
The toughest exotic has to be the crucifix orchid Epidendrum, which takes full exposure, as much watering as falls as rain, and isn’t fussy about soil. Not an indoor plant, but perfect for balcony cover.
Moth orchids, Palaenopsis, need particular attention but no special equipment. They are fine outdoors in full shade with weekly watering, but benefit from being brought indoors to a bright spot in the three winter months.
Oncidiums likewise like bright light and can handle cool nights, as do Miltonias, which need to be kept moist.
Finally, Zygopetalums are very tough and flower reliably, with bright light and rain watering.
The great thing with these orchids is that they grow well with little attention and can be brought indoors while they flower. With the above list I am rarely without an orchid flowering, for bit of indoor colour.
