Green zebra tomatoes

Green zebra tomatoes
Green zebras have great colour for livening a salad.

This is a crop that I’ve been looking forward to very much. Back in Winter when I was sorting through the seed catalogues to see which tomatoes I should get, there was one from the array of choices that I definitely had in mind; green zebra tomatoes to add colour interest to a tomato salad, and as a bonus they were recommended for regions with wet summers.

You can see how pretty they are, the fruit are small, about 5 cm round, with green stripes. Fully ripe, the background colour goes a little yellow. I wouldn’t say the flavour is outstanding, just a nice tomato, but it makes a good contrast in a mixed salad.

True to their description, the plants have stood up well to the warm wet weather. They are not as heavy bearing as my other types, though.

My regret with these (and all the tomatoes) is that I only put in a few plants, so next season I will be setting up at least 5 of each type (one row of each would keep harvesting easy), as fortnightly plantings if I can manage it. I’m currently trying peat starter pots with tomatoes, just one seed in each pot. They were a gift with my last seed order, and seem sensible for things like tomatoes, where most seeds germinate and you grow up a fairly big seedling before planting out.

People talk about tomato gluts, but I am finding it very easy to give away my surplus (some even comes back as relish! Yum!) and I am yet to feel the need to preserve mine. Maybe there will be a preserving session later in the season, but for now we are just enjoying them fresh.
