Growing carrots; not the easiest vegetable

home grown carrots
Two nice straight ones

Maybe carrots are a veg that some people grow easily, but I’m having trouble with them. At least the few that I have pulled have been nice ones, but it would be nice to have more. The local ones at the community market tend to be gnarled, with as many arms and legs as a ginseng root, so I was expecting something similar.

These are the ‘All seasons’ cultivar, which, according to my seed merchant is the most common commercial variety in the region. I also planted ‘Little finger’, which I haven’t had ready to pull at all, I think. Hopefully I can blame teething problems on my poor carrot show. The first row I sowed was on the edge of the bed, and stayed a bit dry. I sowed a second bed in some sandy soil, but it turned out to be infertile and prone to getting too wet from runoff, so the seedlings just sat and sulked all winter. I’ve got two new varieties to try, so when we look like getting more rain I’ll put them in a bed that I’ve already had a crop in, so well dug and pre-fertilised.

Any suggestions for carrot success? I’d love to hear them.
