New beds planted.

It rained on Saturday night, not a lot, but a heavy thunderstorm that got the ground moist again. So I got into the new beds and sowed a new lot of seeds. In this pair of steep narrow terraces I put in a repeat crop of brassicas; radish champion, radish early scarlet globe, daikon, and turnip gold ball. In the rich looking level bed next to it I put a second sowing of some of the salad greens that have poor shows from the May sowing; mustard osaka purple, endive moss curled, dandelion chicory, and rocket.

My beets and kohl rabi from the May sowing were looking too thick now that the leaves are coming on, so I thought I’d try a few transplants into the lower terrace bed. I think the kohl rabi will be fine, as they’re looking perky and to get them I dug out trowel tips and was able to separate the roots. The beets though will be an experiment, as I didn’t want to disturb the largest ones so pretty much just pulled the thinnings out and planted them deep with a wish. They’re not expected to grow good beets if they survive, but I’ve read that they can be good for a greens pick or two. We’ll see.

Meanwhile the rain they were forecasting for Wednesday got postponed to Thursday, and now till Sunday. Hmm.
